How Soon Can I Exercise After Liposuction?
By Dr. Mitchell Cohen

One of the most common questions patients ask before liposuction is, "How soon can I get back to exercising?"
The answer depends on the extent of the procedure, the areas treated, and how your body is healing. However, most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they can return to their normal activities after awake liposuction performed under local anesthesia.
In my practice, I encourage patients to start walking immediately after surgery. Light walking helps promote circulation, reduce stiffness, and support the healing process. Many patients are up and moving around their home the same day and taking short walks the following day.
Returning to the Gym
For more strenuous exercise, I generally recommend waiting about one week before returning to the gym. At that point, most patients can gradually resume activities such as walking on a treadmill, using a stationary bike, light weight training, and other low-impact exercises.
The key is to listen to your body and ease back into your routine rather than trying to pick up where you left off before surgery. It is normal to experience some soreness, swelling, and tenderness during the first several weeks after liposuction. While exercise is beneficial, overdoing it too soon can increase swelling and discomfort.
Patients who have undergone liposuction combined with Quantum RF skin tightening may require a slightly more gradual return to intense exercise depending on the treatment area and the amount of energy used during the procedure.
High-Impact Activities
High-impact activities such as running, jumping, heavy lifting, contact sports, or intense workouts should be resumed only when you feel comfortable and have been cleared by your surgeon.
One advantage of awake liposuction under local anesthesia is that patients avoid the prolonged recovery often associated with general anesthesia. Many patients return to work within a few days and resume light exercise within a week.
Every patient heals differently. During your postoperative visits, I will evaluate your progress and provide recommendations based on your individual recovery.
The goal is not simply to get back to exercise as quickly as possible. The goal is to heal properly while protecting your results and achieving the smoothest body contour possible.
