Can I Drive After Liposuction?
By Dr. Mitchell Cohen

One of the most common questions patients ask before liposuction is, "How soon can I drive afterward?" The answer depends on the type of anesthesia used and how you are feeling after the procedure.
In my practice, all liposuction procedures are performed under local anesthesia while the patient is awake. Because patients do not receive general anesthesia, recovery is often much quicker than many people expect.
On the day of your procedure, you will need someone to drive you home. Even though you are awake during surgery, you may receive medications that can affect your alertness and reaction time. For your safety, driving is not permitted on the day of surgery.
When You Can Drive Again
For most patients, driving can usually be resumed the following day as long as they meet a few important criteria:
- They are no longer taking prescription pain medication.
- They feel alert and comfortable.
- They can safely operate a vehicle without distraction.
- They can move their arms and legs comfortably enough to react quickly in traffic.
Many of my patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they return to normal daily activities. It is common for patients to go out to lunch, run errands, or perform light activities within a day or two after their procedure.
That said, every patient is different. Larger procedures involving multiple areas may result in more soreness than smaller treatments. Safety should always come first. If you are unsure whether you are ready to drive, it is best to wait an extra day and arrange transportation until you feel completely comfortable behind the wheel.
One advantage of awake liposuction under local anesthesia is that patients avoid many of the lingering effects often associated with general anesthesia. This can help speed recovery and allow patients to return to their normal routines more quickly.
